Fine chalk or more aggressive lime is used to increase pH and carbonate hardness in fresh water with the added benefit that such applications can also reduce the volume of silt often found in water bodies with soft water i.e. low pH and carbonate hardness levels.
Each tiny particle of chalk or lime carries with it as it slowly sinks to the bottom a tiny amount of oxygen. The chalk/lime particles land on the bottom silt and create an aerobic environment allowing aerobic bacteria to begin breaking down and consuming the organic bottom silt thereby reducing the silt volume over time.
Usually completed during winter an additional benefit from such applications is the increased natural productivity that often occurs in the water body as soon as spring arrives. More and better conditioned submerged plant life is often a result and the additional volumes of invertebrate life are always welcomed.
Burley Aquatic Developments has all the necessary boats and equipment required to complete such heavy and physical work in a safe and professional manner.
