This stretch
of river runs through a section of public park in Andover, Hampshire.
Over many years the banks had eroded and widened causing a reduction
in water flow and suspended solids to settle as sediment on the rivers'
natural gravel beds.

These gravel
beds were used each year by the wild salmonid population as spawning
habitat, but each year that passed less fish were spawning and natural
recruitment had been severely reduced |

After
careful consideration, sustainable hazel faggot bundles were used
to reduce the river width. This allowed the water flow to increase
and scour away the sediment revealing the gravel beneath.
It also provided the opportunity to backfill and plant behind the
faggots thereby increasing bankside strength plus flora and fauna
habitat diversity simultaneously. |

and enhancement can take many forms, but should be tailored for each
river or lakes' environmental needs, as well as the management's requirements.
